How to use the Venmo and Cash App fee calculator
- Pick Fee on a payment or What to charge (the amount to ask for so you keep a set amount).
- Enter the amount and choose the payment type: Venmo goods and services on a personal account, a Venmo business profile, Cash App for Business, or a free friends and family payment.
- Tick Instant transfer if you move the money to your bank straight away, and set the rate: 1.75% on Venmo, 0.5–1.75% on Cash App.
- Add the number of payments a month to see your fees for the month and the year.

Why sellers shouldn't use friends and family payments
Asking a buyer to send "friends and family" avoids the fee, but it also removes purchase protection for the buyer and seller protection for you, and it breaks both apps' terms when it's really a sale. If a buyer disputes with their bank, you may have nothing to show. For any sale to someone you don't know, use goods and services or a business profile and build the fee into your price.
Instant transfer: worth the fee?
On a $500 week of sales, a Venmo instant transfer costs $8.75; over a year of weekly cash-outs that's more than $450. If you can wait one to three days, the standard transfer is free. Keep a small buffer in your bank so you rarely need instant cash.
Venmo and Cash App vs PayPal, Stripe and Square
For small sellers, a Venmo business profile is one of the cheapest options at 1.9% + 10¢, against PayPal's 3.49% + 49¢. For in-person sales with a card reader, Square costs about the same as Cash App for Business. Compare with the PayPal fee calculator and the Square fee calculator. Reselling on marketplaces instead? Friends and family payments are free; the rent split calculator divides the rent fairly.
Taxes on Venmo and Cash App sales
Payments for goods and services can be reported to the IRS on Form 1099-K once you pass the reporting threshold. Personal friends and family payments aren't income. Keep a record of what you paid for each item sold, because profit, not the payment, is what's taxed.
Track sales, fees and profit
Flip is a reseller profit tracker that records what you paid, what you sold for and every fee, so you see true profit per item. Till does the same for any small business. Both have a free demo you can open in your browser.
