Picking what to sell is the hardest part of starting on Etsy. Choose something too broad and you compete with thousands of identical listings; choose something too small and nobody searches for it. The best Etsy shop ideas sit in between: products people already search for, that you can make or design yourself, with a price that still leaves a real profit after Etsy's fees.
This guide gives you 40 ideas across five types of shops, the trends Etsy itself reported for 2026, the rule changes that closed some old "easy" ideas, and a simple way to check whether an idea will make money before you make a single item.
How to pick an Etsy shop idea that makes money
Run every idea through four questions:
- Do people search for it? Type it into Etsy's search bar and look at the suggestions and the number of results. Suggestions mean demand.
- Can you make it your own? Etsy rewards original, personalized and niche products; generic items lose on price.
- What's left after costs? Materials, packaging, shipping and Etsy's fees of about 10–12% of each order. The Etsy fee calculator shows the exact amount.
- What do you earn per hour? A $40 item that takes three hours can earn less than a $10 download that takes none.
Etsy's own 2026 trends
Etsy's trend team publishes what shoppers search for. For 2026 it named Patina Blue as its Color of the Year and Washed Linen as its first Texture of the Year, a move away from glossy, perfect looks toward soft, lived-in, "perfectly imperfect" style. Its Spring/Summer 2026 report added:
- Gothic Romance: dark, dramatic, vintage-inspired pieces.
- Treat Yourself: small luxuries people buy for themselves.
- Botanical Bride: relaxed weddings with fresh, organic florals.
- Dear Diary: journals, keepsakes and personal storytelling.
- Everyday Exhibits: homes styled like personal galleries, with wall art and collections on display.
For the holiday season, seller research tools point to moody "Gothmas" decor, nostalgic "Nonna" kitchen styles and ballet-inspired Nutcracker decor. Shoppers start looking early: list holiday items by October.
Handmade Etsy shop ideas
- Personalized name or birthstone necklaces. Jewelry is one of Etsy's biggest categories, and personalization lets you charge more.
- Linen goods: napkins, aprons, tea towels and pillow covers in washed linen, Etsy's 2026 texture.
- Hand-poured candles in scents for seasons, zodiac signs or book characters.
- Ceramic mugs, dishes and planters, especially in imperfect, handmade shapes.
- Pet collars, bandanas and name tags. Pet owners spend generously on personalized items.
- Wedding items: ring dishes, cake toppers, signs and bridesmaid gifts for the Botanical Bride look.
- Embroidered patches, hats and sweatshirts.
- Leather goods: wallets, keychains and journal covers with initials.
- Handmade journals and bookbinding for the Dear Diary trend.
- Dried and pressed flower art, frames and phone cases.
- Crochet and knit pieces: amigurumi toys, bags and baby blankets.
- Natural soap and bath sets (follow cosmetic labeling rules).
Digital product ideas
Digital downloads have no material or shipping cost, but they're now held to the same originality rules as physical items (see below).
- Budget, savings and debt payoff planners and spreadsheets.
- Digital and printable wall art for gallery walls.
- Wedding and party invitations buyers edit themselves.
- Teacher resources and homeschool worksheets.
- Meal planners, cleaning schedules and habit trackers.
- Business templates: invoices, price lists, social media kits for other small businesses.
- Sewing, knitting and crochet patterns you designed.
- Kids' activity printables: coloring pages, chore charts, scavenger hunts.
Print on demand ideas
With print on demand, a partner prints and ships each order, so you never hold stock. Margins are thinner, so your design has to do the selling.
- Niche T-shirts and sweatshirts for hobbies, jobs and fandoms.
- Custom pet portraits on mugs, blankets and canvases.
- Gallery-style art prints in Patina Blue and other 2026 colors.
- Personalized family or wedding date posters.
- Tote bags with book, garden or city designs.
- Phone cases and tech accessories with original art.
- Stickers for planners, laptops and water bottles.
- Holiday ornaments with names and years.
Vintage shop ideas
Items must be at least 20 years old to sell as vintage on Etsy. Thrift stores, estate sales and garage sales are the main sources; our guide to how to start reselling covers sourcing.
- Vintage clothing, especially 80s and 90s pieces.
- Mid-century glassware, dishes and kitchenware.
- Vintage jewelry and brooches.
- Old books, maps and magazines as physical items.
- Retro home decor: lamps, frames and brass pieces for gallery walls.
- Vintage linens and table cloths for the Nonna kitchen trend.
Craft supply ideas
- Hand-dyed yarn and fabric.
- Beads, charms and jewelry-making kits.
- DIY craft kits: embroidery, candle making, crochet starter kits.
- Stamps, stencils and cutting files you designed.
- Packaging supplies for small shops: custom stickers, thank-you cards, mailers.
- Wedding DIY supplies: ribbons, place card blanks, dried flowers.
What one sale really leaves you
Etsy takes a $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% of the order and 3% + $0.25 for payment processing. Here's what's left for a few of the ideas above (buyer pays any shipping charge separately; your own shipping costs included where noted):
| Idea | Price | Your costs | Etsy fees | Profit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Printable budget planner | $8 | $0 | $1.21 | $6.79 |
| Personalized necklace | $35 | $6 materials + $4.50 shipping | $3.78 | $20.73 |
| Art print | $28 | $7.50 print + packaging | $3.11 | $17.39 |
| Candle gift set | $45 | $14 materials + $6 shipping | $4.73 | $20.28 |
| Print on demand T-shirt | $24 | $9 printing + $5 shipping | $2.73 | $7.27 |
Sales that come through Etsy's Offsite Ads cost another 12–15% (capped at $100), which turns a thin print on demand profit into almost nothing. That's why the price has to leave room. Work out a price that covers materials, time and fees with the markup calculator, and how many sales you need to cover your costs with the break-even calculator.
Ideas that no longer work on Etsy
Some popular "passive income" ideas break Etsy's rules since its Creativity Standards were tightened in June 2025:
- Products made from bought templates or designs, even with a commercial license. Items must be based on your own design.
- Digital files of scanned vintage content such as old photos, books or patterns.
- Reselling commercially bought natural items like crystals or shells you haven't made into something new.
- AI-generated items without disclosure. If you use AI in your design process, say so in the listing.
Print on demand is still allowed with your own designs: mark the listing as designed by you and name your production partner. Keep your design files as proof that the work is yours.
How to start your Etsy shop
- Pick one niche and one buyer: "personalized dog gifts" beats "gifts".
- List 10–20 products so search has enough to show.
- Take bright, natural-light photos and a lifestyle shot of the item in use.
- Write titles and tags the way buyers search, for example "personalized dog collar with name".
- Price for profit after fees, materials, shipping and your time.
- Track every sale and cost from day one. Etsy sends a Form 1099-K above the reporting threshold, but you owe tax on profit either way; see quarterly estimated taxes.
Not sure the effort pays? Our honest look at whether selling on Etsy is worth it shows how to work out your profit per hour, and Etsy fees explained breaks down every charge. Selling at craft fairs too? The Square fee calculator shows what card payments cost in person.
Know your profit from the first sale
Till is a small business profit planner that splits every sale into costs, fees, a tax set-aside and your own pay, so you always know what your Etsy shop really earns. If you sell vintage or resell, Flip tracks profit item by item, including what you paid and every fee. Both have a free demo with sample data.
Fees and policies as of October 2026; check Etsy's Seller Handbook and fee page before you start.
