How to use the random meal generator

  1. Set your filters: protein, how much time you have, and whether it needs to be budget-friendly or kid-friendly.
  2. Add your own meals (optional) so your family's favorites are in the draw.
  3. Press Pick another dinner until something sounds good.
  4. Scroll to A week of dinners: keep the nights you like and press New week to shuffle the rest.

Why "what's for dinner?" is so hard

Deciding is the tiring part, not cooking. By 5 p.m. most of us have made hundreds of small decisions, and a blank evening with an open fridge is one too many. That's why the same few meals go round and round, and why takeout wins on busy nights.

Three things make it easier:

  • A short list of meals your family already likes. Twenty to thirty is plenty.
  • Theme nights, so Tuesday is always tacos and you only pick which tacos.
  • Planning the week once, so the deciding happens on Sunday, not at 6 p.m.

Theme night ideas

Night Theme Ideas
Monday Meatless Monday Black bean tacos, chickpea curry, lentil soup
Tuesday Taco Tuesday Beef, chicken, fish or bean tacos, burritos, quesadillas
Wednesday Pasta night Spaghetti and meatballs, pesto pasta, mac and cheese
Thursday Soup or stir-fry Chicken noodle soup, veggie stir-fry, fried rice
Friday Fun Friday Homemade pizza, burgers, sliders
Saturday Slow Saturday Chili, beef stew, pulled pork
Sunday Sunday supper Roast chicken, pot pie, lasagna

From a random dinner to a real plan

Once the week is picked, you need a grocery list for it. Our weekly meal plan template shows how to go from seven dinners to one shopping trip, and how to save money on groceries covers the rest.

Simmer, our meal planner app, does this with your own recipes. Fill My Week suggests dinners for empty nights and tells you why (a theme night, food that needs using up, something you haven't made lately). A Meal Jar picks a dinner when nobody can decide, and the grocery list builds itself from the plan. Try the free demo with a sample family kitchen.

Frequently asked questions

What should I make for dinner tonight?

Start with what you have and how much time you've got. With 20 minutes: chicken quesadillas, tuna melts, egg fried noodles or pesto pasta. With 30 minutes: sheet-pan chicken fajitas, beef tacos, black bean tacos or fried rice. With more time: chili, lasagna or a roast chicken. Press the button above for a random pick that matches your filters.

How does the random meal generator work?

It draws a dinner at random from about 80 everyday family meals, filtered by protein, cooking time, budget and kid-friendliness. Add your own meals to mix them in, or choose My list only to draw just from your family's favorites.

Can it make a meal plan for the week?

Yes. A week of dinners is built under tonight's pick, with no repeats and optional theme nights: Meatless Monday, Taco Tuesday, Pasta Wednesday, Soup or stir-fry Thursday, Fun Friday, Slow Saturday and Sunday supper. Press Keep on the nights you like and New week shuffles the rest. Print it or save it as a PDF.

What are good theme night ideas for dinner?

Popular ones are Meatless Monday, Taco Tuesday, Pasta or Stir-fry Wednesday, Soup Thursday, Pizza or Fun Friday, Grill Saturday and a Sunday roast or slow-cooker supper. Theme nights cut down on decisions because you only choose between a few meals each night.

What are cheap dinner ideas for a family?

Bean and cheese burritos, lentil soup, pasta with sauce and vegetables, fried rice, chili, baked potato bars, egg dishes and sheet-pan chicken thighs are some of the cheapest family dinners. Turn on Budget-friendly only to get only those.

Does it save my list?

Your choices, your own meals and kept nights can be saved in your browser, copied as a link or printed. Nothing is sent to a server.
